How effective is an elliptical machine for weight loss?

I have an elliptical machine and have been using it for 20 mins. per day. I just increased to 40 mins. per day and would like to know how effective this will be. I am doing this in conjunction with the diet pill alli. I am trying to lose weight, however, I am wondering if I should go to the gym across the or stay home on my elliptical 40 mins. per day.

How much weight do you think I can lose in the course of 1 month?

Lots of variables in there. For example, if you weigh 300 pounds, losing 20 may be no big deal. If you weigh 150, maybe you’ll lose 3-4 pounds.

That said, the elliptical is my favorite cardio machine. While actual outdoor running is harder, the elliptical is smoother and there seems to be less chance of injury — meaning, you can go hard.

That said, you must go hard enough to break a decent sweat and feel pretty tired after to see results. No lollygagging.

Try it and see…different things and excersises work for different people.
I love the elliptical. You have to go a minimum of 40 minutes, and really challenge yourself…and you have to increase the intensity over a period of time otherwise your body could get used to it.

I weighed 127 and went to 121 in a month.

Eddie is right- a lot of things can determine how fast (or slow) you’ll lose weight. The elliptical machine by itself is pretty decent. It allows you to work out “harder”, but has a lower impact on your joints than say…running. Increasing to 40 minutes is good because usually fat burning (or fatty acid oxidation) doesn’t happen until the after the first 20 minutes anyways. Just remember, in order to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume (3500 for every lb). I’d save the money you would be spending at the gym and buy some small free weights instead. Incorporating weight lifting can help you lose weight too.

the machine will be good to start off at. Running outside is alot better. but as for the machine, if you can keep you intesity high and keep your heart rate at 80-85% of your max. heart rate. you can burn 210-235 calories in your 40 minute workout. that and a steady diet, you should be able to lose atleast 10 lbs.
GOOD LUCK

I have been through it all and know what’s it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can’t be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I’ve worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes.

Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight.

First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can’t eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising…

This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it’s good for the heart.

However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It’s so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I’ve found a great addition to help any one out, it’s a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don’t get all crazy on me and say diet pills don’t work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn’t meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It’s an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I saved money on the pills at theweightlossplace .com along with getting some good info. It basically makes those fingers not go towards the cookie jar. For me it’s the best pill I’ve tried and I’ve tried cupboards full. Now this doesn’t mean you have to follow my foot steps but I’ve successfully lost roughly 70 pounds and keeping it off til this day.

Well good luck and remember what I said, Dedicate.
