Cool video about elliptical machine - have a look:
The elliptical is quite possibly the most popular cardio machine out there. It has many great points but some bad ones. Naturaly, the Fit Rebel isn't afraid to take the gloves off and tell the other side of the story. www.TheFitrebel.com

@spellaho It will get better. Persevere.
Oh sure it will. The human body will become conditioned and capable of handling any kind of stress we send it through (provided that stress doesn’t kill us). Keep in mind though that as it gets easier you burn fewer calories per unit of time. That’s when it’s a good idea to keep ramping up the intensity
I just got one of these last week, I need to loose 20lbs…
30 minutes??? Low reps??? Who are you kidding, this thing is kicking my fat ass..I cant stay on it for longer than 1 minute.
Please tell me it will get better.
Oh sure, they can certainly get the heart rate up and some people do like the more gentile motion for AM workouts. Back when I was in college I practically lived on the elliptical. Again it’s not that they are not really bad, it’s just that I think there are much simpler, easier, cheaper and more effective methods out there.
I like your point they are not natural motion machines that replicate real world and thus they do not prepare you for activities such as running/hiking etc. My question is: are they a good way to increase heart rate for a 15-20min workout early in the morning when I cannot get outside (at 5am) for pretty much any other cardio work? Your Thoughts…
Also, going at a low resistance for 30 minutes isn’t going to do anything. Thats what most people tend to do at gyms. If you want to burn fat, you have to use it at high resistances.
@sweetkisses4uonly The elliptical machine isn’t a physical workout but rather a cardiovascular workout. The point of it is to raise and drop your heart rate which burns fat. The calorie count might be a little off but it really depends on how you configure the machine. My dad lost 80 pounds from the elliptical and went from being at risk of heart disease to healthy.
Oh for sure, calorie measurement on any piece of cardio equipment is an educated guess at best. IN reality you can use anything and lose weight. But then again you can use anything and NOT lose weight. It’s all about tipping the balance into the negative and you can do that a million and one ways. Use ellipticals can work, but they don’t work any better than any other form of calorie expenditure.
So right you are, you can get in shape just flapping your arms in the air if you put the time and effort into it. As you can see from the flamage below I’ve touched on a bit of a nerve. Oh well I’m The FIt Rebel, not the fit dude who follows every trend. It’s not that the elliptical is bad, it’s just that I think we can do so much better.
you are right, at first i was going against your opinion..but then! I remember that one guy i saw talking on his cell while using the elliptical and taking his sweet as time, while the machine said that he was burning 1400 calories. I amped up the resistance in mine and was working my ass off, 45 minutes and sweating like crazy! this guy was using it for a longer time and was not even breaking a sweat. O_O
I think it is all up to what you put into it it and how well you use it. Like weights
Whatever I love the elliptical it helped me lose 50 pounds.
i can’t believe you are saying the calorie count is so off…i don’t believe you…”doesn’t mean you’re going to make progress on weight loss?…what?then what should we use.
This guy is all coked up
The reason I want an ellipital is for the lack of impact. My treadmill can cause joint pain after running on it too much.
It’s nothing special, sales copy for the machine is very typical of an elliptical training I’m weary of anything that advertises a “Natural motion”. It’s like taking artificial and processed foods and saying they have natural flavoring. Either way it’s an artificial motion and it will give you a great workout, but that’s like saying you can also feel full eating a box of Twinkies. There are much better alternatives out there than an elliptical. But if you really like using one, go for it.
You have several good points, but have you checked out Yowza’s Captiva Elliptical trainer? Your opinion?
yea they are really pricey. A good one will easily run you 2-3 grand. Hiking up a good sized hill is free.
I used one @ a hotel and I gotta say I had a much better time than a treadmill but damn theyre expensive!!
lol I am Twitcher Hear me roar!
ima call him twiches…cuz hes my twicher
yea for sure, if it’s a good fit for a special circumstance then it works great. But over all I don’t think that’s the case with most elliptical users.
i do agree with your point but if you take an obese person for instance who may have joint pain and low energy or even pack problems the elliptical is a very low impact machine that they can easily use without having to pound your feet like with a treadmill. I cannot use a treadmill because i get sore ankles within 5 mintues, but i can go on a cross trainer/elliptical for 1 hour and burn 3 times as many callories without ankle pain.
Well done on getting back into the game from the injury.
yea 350 sounds about right for your weight and how hard you may be working. Of course this number could be off as much as 100 cal in either direction. As you get lighter you will use fewer calories plus you burn less as you become more fit in general. Keep up the good work!
I am recovering from an injury and am having difficulty using the treadmill (problems with impact on knees). However, I just started using the elliptical for the first time and enjoy it. I am pushing myself very hard and no impact on my knees! It tells me that after 30 min, I am burning over 350 calories (weigh 210). Is this accurate? I am using very light resistance, but am pushing hard! Thank you.
great review
